Rebecca was 12 when the beatings finally stopped,

Her father packed his bags and his fists away

By then Rebecca was hooked on drugs,

Taking anything to get through another day.....................

At 13 Rebecca's mother took a new lover,

From then on her world went from bad to worse

Raped and abused by a man her mother loved

She began to view her life as nothing but a curse………

Rebecca endured a life of constant abuse

And at 14 she just couldn't take it anymore

She begged her mum to throw her man out

But it was Rebecca who was shown the door...................

Abandoned buildings became Rebecca’s new home

Derelict houses that let in the wind and the rain

She began to self harm on a regular basis

Turning her emotional hurt into a physical pain...............

Rebecca would sniff paint ‘til she blacked out

She would eat food that the rats left behind

She lost any sense of pride that she may have had

And eventually; she almost lost her mind.....................................

One particular harsh day Rebecca chose to die

She slashed her wrists open with a rusty knife

Rebecca laid down her head in the gutter

And she waited for the end of her life........................................

A passerby found her lying in a crumpled heap

He called an ambulance straight away

She was taken to the hospital emergency room

And she lived to breath another day...........................................

Two homeless charity workers befriended Rebecca

Two young men who asked her nothing in return

They volunteered all the free time they had

Because from Rebecca they wanted to learn......................

In time this young woman’s story reached out to others

Homeless kids on the wrong side of the track

She reached out to them, as the men had to her

And from then on she's never looked back.........................

Rebecca’s Community is a homeless charity in Australia

Set up in this courageous young woman’s name

Helping others that the world left behind

Showing them all they're not to blame.................................

Another homage, and a well-deserved one. I was curious about this poem aws I read the title as I had heard of Rebecca's Community when I had a short stay in Aussie.
