Don't be Late

Don't be Late

A Poem by Lindsay

Weigh me down, I feel you there.

Breathing cool and pressured air.

Saw you coming slowly on

Closing in, dark curtains drawn.

Do I walk, but can I sleep?

Thoughts rise quick,

From underneath.

Familiar cloud I can’t shake forth,

Point my compass shy of north.

For you know well, or is it me?

How long can this ride truly be?

There you are again, again.

For I descend the lion’s den.

Knowing, willing, wondering.

What hell has spread its darkened wing?

Oh dark cloud, drench my downturned face.

I dropped my coat in fervent chase.

The curtains close, it’s no use now,

So exit, silent, none to bow.

But what if I just sleep today?

Leave the sick, the quick, the fray?

Would you come and lie with me?

Sing to me and leave me be?

And when the clock, it gets to eight,

Dress me, tell me.

Don’t be late.

Really interesting work. I love monologues and this is another example of a great one. I may need to read it a couple more times to understand your message but it seems to me to be like a wait for someone whom you really love and that you are hoping he makes it in time. Possibly there is some anxiety mixed with concerns about whether he will actually come by. Nice poem. Deep. Well written. Loved it !!
