Maybe I Did Miss You

Maybe I Did Miss You

A Poem by Eala Cartwright

"Why? Did you miss me?"
He asks,
And I can see it in his smirk

He's joking, yet not really joking.
He longs to know
If his natural charm still works

I roll my eyes
In casual boredom,
Fake annoyance at his arrogance.

But his words ring in my head
Because he's right
And it is taunting my subconscious

I have missed him.
Missed him like a drowning man
Would miss breathing

But I don't have the courage
In the moment
To confess him my reasons.

Not now;
Not in front of our friends
Friend's who see but cannot see

The deeper meaning
Behind the shy smiles
And twisting tentative tease.

So instead I wait
Until we are in his car later.
He pulls to a stop at my cue,

"Maybe."
I smirk, leaning back inside the door.
He looks at me then, confused,

"Just maybe I did miss you."
