The American Teens

A Poem by A-TRIP2LIVSmind
"

My experience

"

1

See they won't wanna  be your friend

Properly because your hair is too nappy

either your accent is too strong or your outfit is not in "in style "

But they won't wanna be your friend

Maybe you're too quiet possibly too dark or in their world, the thought of you being an African girl  " African" simply makes you poor.

So yea they won't wanna be your friend

2

They will bully you, they will laugh at you every time you get on that bus, they will throw papers at your well-rounded afro hair, you will walk home a lot no matter the distance because You just don't want to be bothered, even so they still find you

They will laugh at you every time you talk in class, and  will mimics

your accent, they will laugh at you at the gym, you get so clueless

you will cut school, sit under that big tree by the playground, you  will cry, you will wish for your life back home.

3

They will ask you questions, like do African people have TV, did your African people live in the forest, do African people sleep with the animals, why do you speak English, can you speak African. You will laugh in your head a lot but you won't blame their ignorant set of minds for you will notice that in their world  is all they see on TV and hear around them.

You will distance yourself, but they won't leave you alone, you will hate them. Like me, you won't necessarily be sad but annoyed and irritated

You will just ignore them

The Thought of fighting only means dealing with your typical Africa parents. You will just ignore them.  But then something will change

4

Now they wanna be your friend

Properly because your hair is not too nappy anymore either your accent is not too strong or your outfit is "in style "and more than they can ever afford

But they will wanna be your friend

Maybe because they released your quietness is a  level of discipline in your life or your dark skin tone fits you so beautifully. Maybe Is because you grew into an African woman, they can never break down

So they will wanna be your friend. As the same African girl that  was laughed at, you will put the pieces together, smile a smile so bright

You will forgive but say you do not wanna be their friend.
