Second Place

Second Place

A Poem by Lou Woo

I remember in the elementary school years
Those good ol' years from way back then
When first was the worst and second was the best
Because everybody wanted to win

But we all know gold's worth more than silver
And number one is marked by gold
So if my brother's the golden child
Then clearly I am silver

Although je suis plus âgée qu'il
He stands at the acme of my parents' heart
I'm lower on the cliff, fighting wind torrents- fighting my own brother
Trying and failing to reach the peak

Look at the two of us this way:
I am that '60s coffee colored Chevrolet with broken gears
And he is the shiny new Ferrari with heated leather seats
Can't be difficult to guess which one they'd wanna drive

But hey, who cares, look on the bright side

Soon I'll be an antique
With a lot of value
And my brother? What would he be?
Maybe a silly red sport's car

And besides
Just take a peak at today's economy
The price of gold is rising
But guess what? Silver's growing faster!

Oh those good ol' days of elementary school
Where first was the worst and second was the best
It seems to be coming back to me
Because I am silver, I am the antique truck, and I am second place

But- most importantly- no matter what anyone thinks
I am the best in my world
And that is all that matters
