The Edge of the City

The Edge of the City

A Poem by Laura Kate

You did it again.
You took me to the greatest of heights,
I didn't want to see,
and it was beautiful -
even more beautiful
than I remembered.

You held out your hand
and helped me climb up to you
right at the top
and there we stood under the orange sun
which was starting to set
tucking itself away
behind the grey
of the city scape

and we listened to the birds
and we felt the fresh air on our cheeks
and we basked in the beauty of quiet,
and still...

and then you turned
and you left
and you left me
back up there
on the edge

and suddenly
I lost my bearings
so suddenly
I lost my footing
suddenly
I stumbled
and I fell.

This time, it wasn't quite as painful.
This time, the fall wasn't quite as long.
but this time
somehow,
it felt worse.

This time,
I won't be waiting for you
to help
pick me
up again.

This time,
I will help myself.

Wow... this is great! You tell a really sad story in truly beautiful words. A challenge you mastered quite well.
