That First Morning

That First Morning

A Poem by Laura Kate

What was it like

that first morning

did you forget what had happened

the day before

were you expecting to find me

right where I usually lay?

did you want to scoop me in

longing for my skin

to lure you

away from your dreams

did you reach to kiss

the back of my neck

and run your fingers through my hair

waiting for my hand to seek yours

as the California sun

warmed us

through your bedroom window

were you instead greeted

with an empty space

did you miss walking up to

my sleeping face

did you trace an outline

with your fingers

where my body used to be

trying to remember

my lines

my curves

while it was all still fresh

before it fades away

just like me

soon to be

only a distant part

of your memory.
