It Happened Again

It Happened Again

A Poem by Lou Marx
"

Based on a headstone found on in Lancaster Castle's cemetery. A woman with many lost little ones.

"

It happened again, yet he lasted longer.

He made it to 10 months, our champion.

Our tenth little child that passed away.

Buried in the courtyard, next to his

Siblings"brothers and sister, also unlucky.

She sits in the nursery. For every hour of a day.

Staring out the window. Her hand on the cradle.

Rocking. Rocking. The phantom child,

That's always there. A gentle push

To the silent sleep. It's final rest.

Each time we try, each time we fail.

Is God testing us? Punishing us?

Not surviving or not there at all.

We are put through the test until...

Finally, she's born, so small, so pink.

Crying and screaming"I pray she lives.

It happened again, yet she didn't live long.

She made it to 4 months, she lost the race.

Our eleventh little child that passed away.

Buried in the courtyard, next to her

Siblings"brothers and sister, also unlucky.
