What Am I to You?

What Am I to You?

A Poem by Ally Baker

What am I to you?

These days it’s so hard to tell

What you really think of me

And what you really don’t

When it’s just you and me

I hear all those sweet nothings

You tell me I’m beautiful and you

Go on and on about how you love me

But when your friends are around

All of that changes, and I’m nothing

You don’t even know me as far as they

Are concerned. I’m just a random girl.

Why is it that you must act this way?

Why am I only important to you

When no one else can see us? Do you

Tell anyone about me? About our love?

What about that girl that’s always

Hanging around you, falling all over you?

You say she likes you, but you don’t like her

Yet she slides into your lap and you smile

You tell me your friends expect it of you

That you have some girl on your arm.

But why can’t I be that girl? You say

You love me, so why can’t I be her?

What am I to you?

If you love me, and I love you

Yet you can’t be seen with me

What am I to you?

Something we all go through, men and women, although not many men admit.
Lovely writing I was with it all the way.

i really enjoyed this piece! it's so relatable to females out there. it's well-written and very in-touch with the writer's emotions towards the guy. way to go!

Oh, I am having the same troubles. You are good writer, really good at expressing your emotions. This is written so well, showing how hard relationships can be when there's peer pressure involved. Cliques and peer pressure.

You bring such a vivid clarity to that complex sense of relationships. This is beautifully bittersweet, breathing with the pain of being on the outside of love. Been there, so could relate perhaps too well.

I like this. It shows how someone doesn't care enough to show it. It exposes al of those environmental barriers. Don't you hate it?
