The Wishing Well of Time

The Wishing Well of Time

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

The hours are hazy
but the minutes always crystal clear
I throw pennies
into the wishing well of time
as what seems like summer humidity plays hide and seek
with pumpkins and goblins
the seemingly warm scent of memory
is harsh and ruthless
informing me some things will never change
then laughing its evil laugh
reminds me of life’s cruel
and constant contradiction
nothing really stays the same

I think this is why the Buddhists make a big deal out of detachment. They're right about that. Everything is impermanent. This was a haunting poem. I even read it twice. I barely read some of this stuff once so me reading it twice is saying something. It's saying I have ADD is what it's saying.

time marches on and with it's passage we are constantly changing...we can have our fond memories
of the past, even wishes of those good times to be once more..`.but nothing really, stays the same`
how true that truly is...this is so beautifully expressed in elegant verse

Thank you very much for the review...and for understanding. Lydi**
Ahh...the comedy and tragedy that is life! Cruel ironies and bitter contradictions, they are never ending! But your poem here shows me beauty in a way that fills me with peace...in spite of that 'evil laugh'. some things we just learn to accept as time moves on. your poetry is truly comforting to read, Lydi.

You are welcome. I like the poetry that share good wisdom.
You speak with wisdom in that we are ever changing as we slide from one day to another, from one month to another, from one year to a new year. With each change we have a choice to ride the current of that which is no longer the same, or drown within its riptide. There are too many times when we are given little choice but to accept what comes our way. There are those who resist it, even fight it, but doing so does not prevent it from happening. It is a part of life!
Wise words to allow one to look within the spirit to evaluate how it is handled - accept, or reject. We do have a choice.

It is always my pleasure to review your creations!!!!!!!!!
True Lydi nothing stays the same but in balance nothing changes, or at least change is normally evolutionary and incremental unless something catastophic occurs. Age on the other hand just keeps on coming. Eloquent write.

in some respects, good that nothing really stays the same...but some of the good hours?

wouldn't mind of throwing those pennies could bring them back...

You can say that again and if you do. please say it as eloquently and beautifully as you have in your poem above. Lydi, your words are pure magic. Things do change and often that can be a good thing because one of the changes I adore is your poetry gets better each time I read.
