mature rainbows

mature rainbows

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

the driving rain beckons me with a certain charisma
even though i'm way past
the splashing-in-puddles stage of life
a crack in the window allows an epiphany to seep in
              sensible shoes
scuffed with lots of experience aren’t as sexy
as the high heels now living in the back of my closet
but they won’t pinch my toes
they are the pot of gold at the end of my rainbow

i find myself smiling
while mature rainbows
nod their understanding heads
looking oh so appealing
through afternoon clouds

Those high-heel times were certainly glory days; the accompanying slink, wiggle and bounce intriguing to most men.
But sensible shoes always win out--in the same way that sensible guys eventually overtake the bad boys.
To this bad boy's lifelong disappointment.
Entertaining read, Lydi!

That was very great description and I believe that you stay young until you decide to be old, some of decide that at an early age others on a certain age,but i still believe that we are all young inside, and that work showed the young girl inside you. I loved this work and enjoyed it :)

You are so right. Chronological age has nothing to do with how old a person really is. Some people.. read more

Always my pleasure:)
I find this very special. Female, young, remembering and quite, quite (at the risk f sounding patronising and heaven forbid that I do) lovely,

this is exactly the picture I have in my head about me later in my years. although, i must confess I hope I will still desire to wear heels ;) and watch out for those mature rainbows, they can be too dashing and breath taking at times. I really loved this one Lydia. You got me hooked on your writing style.

Amen!!! :):)
"even though i'm way past
the splashing-in-puddles stage of life" - never ! I think you can still splash in the puddles aged 21 !!

I really liked the ingenuity of the shoe metaphor Lydia - letting epiphanies seep in sensible shoes - simply wonderful phrases. You have sexiness oozing out from this one
thanks for sharing this dear Lydia

I enjoyed your take on my poem, Anto. Sure, I still splashed when I was 21, but that was MANY years.. read more
wiser in that we wear what is most comfortable...at our age we finally get to be ourselves, and if others don't like it? tough...we smile through those mature rainbows....and run, but not in high heels...
love the clouds in this poem.

Running in high heels is what killed my knees to begin with! Thanks for the review, Jacob. Lydi**
I can feel the wisdom in this piece. We get wiser as we get older, seeking comfort and sensibility. I can relate to this! There's something really cool about being comfortable with who we are~
