I Smile

I Smile

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by Victor Bauer

I smile
because I have lived it
danced to it
the narcotic rhythm of verse
lived in it and through it
submerged myself in a bubble bath
of steamy innuendo
flowers and caution
thrown to the winds of chance
reveled in that parallel universe
where contraband is confiscated
then hidden by butterflies
in the wild grass of thought

I smile
because I have known the quiet urgency
the unexplainable yearning
of stalking that perfect syllable
in a place where words rule
where peeling meaning off lines
of succulent verse
simply to devour its sweet sections
somehow makes more sense
than most any other pursuit

Reading this is like watching a dream come true. This is everything that a poet can't explain. all those heady concoction of emotions, that no one else will understand. I've always believed that all poets have this certain emptiness, that poetry alone can fill. You have described that mystical feeling and yearning perfectly. love that ending..at that point my smile just exploded! :D.

It is the truth!
dear Lydi, poetry does explain life in
many colors of emotion... searching for
the perfect words of surrendering and
being vulnerable to the nectar of
fulfillment. To feel the breeze before
a storm. The petals of your poetry
fall gently on my mind. truly, Pat

The heart of a poet, spelled out in perfect pros.
What an amazing capture of thoughts and feelings about the medium we work with.
But I must say; You work with words better than anyone I know.

This is an incredible piece of your world.

You always bring a smile to my heart when I read you.
