remember

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by hessam

the stubborn wind shakes its fist at us tonight

scattering secrets on the table

a suggestion of a summer storm is whispered

while we tiptoe into the autumn of our lives

albeit under duress

i lean into your nouns

you inch closer to my disowned verbs

all the while playing peek-a-boo with that dream

we stored in our favorite denims all those years ago

yes, it was when petals were still on the flowers

the sky was always blue

and “limit” was a word we did not comprehend

but tonight the wind brings with it reality

still, somehow it’s enough for me

knowing we both remember

This is hauntingly beautiful! Love your "s" alliteration in the beginning, as it mimics the sound of wind. My favorite line: "Limit was a word we did not comprehend" -- that just about sums up youthful longing in my book! I love the way your ending settles into a comfortable tension between the raging storm & sharing a memory (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I caught my breath here...Words so deep, there are so many things being said. A lasting flame, though muted by the winds of time, still burns as brightly as it can. Indeed, its enough to remember...The concluding lines etch the message beautifully and clearly.

Divya, you always "feel" my words and I so appreciate that. Thank you. Lydi**
The image you have chosen for your words of remembrance of a love of memory is just perfect; she seems to be fading back into the time of those days! Storms come upon us and yet they are often not horrific enough to take away that which lives in the heart.

The way you have woven nature with your memories is wonderful!!

I appreciate your review so much, Sheila. Thank you. Lydi**
Sad when we mourn the passing of lost love and the regret lasts into later life. But at least those thoughts a still precious.

Thanks very much, Galadriel. Lydi**
Love has no limits even in old age. We can still love till the last breath. But we can keep the dream alive or kill it ignorantly. Marvelous.

You are welcome, Lydia.
new storms cannot blow away the old, fond memories...
and those disowned verbs want to belong again...

love the metaphorical nature here, and the combination of nature and human nature---
