Looking at things we do to make people stay

I lied to you
To make you stay,
To make me believe,
To make you hold me.

To fill
The pounding
Silence.
To hush the echo
Of your stare.

Now it's quiet.

I've run out of responses
Other than to
Love you,
Properly and entirely,
And fall asleep
With my head
On your chest.

I open the door
To let you leave,
To let you slam it
In my face;
But hope,
Beyond hope,
You stay.

You say you will,
No matter the price,
No matter the pain.

The truth arrives,
As you walk away.

Why did you stay?
You saw
My dirtiest face.
You felt the sting
Of my cheapest word.

"Because it's
What's right"
Is all that you say.

I chose to be better,
Since
You stayed.

You saved me,
by nothing other
Than not running away.
