Battles

Battles

A Poem by AmeliaGerhardt

Two opposing sides
staring one another down across the battlefield

A battle that contains no swords,
but wears all the armor in the world;
my pain versus my happiness.

Happiness fighting for my freedom
and pain fighting for a voice

Who is the enemy
when both sides show
reason and surrender?

Perhaps it is I who is the enemy.
The one who has held both sides
prisoners to my own internal war,
unable to surface the peace
in which each side longs for.
Unable to listen long enough
to come to an agreement.

This battle has gone on far too long.
Though the two have been forced against one another,
I am the one to blame for the casualties involved.

For the battles lost, I am sorry.
For the battles that may arise,
grant the soldiers peace of mind.
Grant the one in charge a soul without
worry, a voice loud enough for all to hear,
and a home in which both sides may live in unison
knowing that they are both relevant and everlasting
in this life.

For one day I will realize that happiness has no purpose
without the pain that comes before her.
