Shag-bark Hickory

Shag-bark Hickory

A Poem by Maggie Hess

These are all of the words I do not share with you.

These are all the poems I don't write you.

I have such warmth for you I want to share

but to grow the tree needs space

so I walk away from it.

I don't swing on its branches.

I don't reach out beneath it.

I don't collect all the leaves as they fall.

I don't even look up the species.

I don't even water the tree when the rain stops so long.

I just put my faith in her strength and walk away.
