The reunion - Never a dull moment

The reunion - Never a dull moment

A Story by Daniel Maguire

Luke stood up and extended a hand to Jackie. They embraced each other, the inside of Luke's jacket was a warm high quality fleece. She buried her face deep into his chest and wept quietly. She had forgotten what the embrace of someone had actually felt like
"Jackie". Luke's tone of voice had changed dramatically. "I'm gonna need you to look at me for a moment and promise me you won't panic"
Jackie looked up and could see that where they were standing was bathed in a blue flashing light. She glanced over her shoulder and could just about see the squad car. There was a shadowy figure moving along the fence with a flashlight undoubtedly searching for the opening
"Is that the cop's?" Jackie asked wiping her eyes and trying desperately not to panic. Luke handed her his jacket and began to limber up
"No I don't think so it looks like a rent-a-cop to me". He could see that Jackie was worried "don't sweat it Jackie, you're forgetting one of us was a juvenile delinquent growing up. I'll see you back at the reunion"
Luke pecked her lightly on the lips and took off running across the 40 yard line. Jackie could see the shadowy figure still awkwardly searching for the opening. Luke was quick and agile he had only just reached the fence and he was already over it. The rattling caught the attention of the guard and he bolted back to the car and tore off down the street in pursuit of Luke
"Never a dull moment" Jackie said smiling to herself and draping Luke's jacket over her shoulders
She took off down the road with a spring in her step that hadn't been there in an awful long time. She was back at the reunion in no time at all and things had come to a screeching halt

The whole affair had by this time, been stripped of all It's niceties and self restraint. There in the middle of it all stood Huey Dormer, he almost seemed like some sort of totem of excess. Jackie slowed her pace and plunged her hands deep into the pockets of Luke's jacket
"Jackie! Baby!" Huey lurched forward with a beer in each hand and another sitting precariously in his jacket pocket
"I see you're making the best of the free bar Huey"
"Trying my best, but have you seen this f*****g nonsense". Huey was clutching one of his three beers, waving it in Jackie's face. "What's this bullshit, huh. Little beer spritzers. It tastes like someone drank a beer and then spat into a glass of lemonade"

"That's fascinating Huey, have you seen Luke?"
"He was meant to be rolling me a fat one". Huey was stumbling clumsily through his sentences now. The smell of whiskey hung heavy on his breath
The door of the hotel swung open. Chastity was making a break for it, the night had taken it's toll and she was feeling a tad emotional
"Hey homecoming queen!". Huey barked at her from across the parking lot. She glanced over in his direction, made out Huey's lecherous form and kept moving. "Hey don't be like that baby I voted for you!"
Jackie could see that Chastity was upset. She was about halfway across the parking lot but nonetheless Jackie could just picture the thick globs of Mascara running down her cheeks. There was a time in Jackie's life when she would have reveled in Chastity's misery but she wasn't that person anymore
"Hey Huey" Huey turned to face Jackie and she clocked him one. If he had of been sober it may have played out differently, but he hit the floor harder then Jackie had hit him
"Never a dull moment". Luke had appeared from almost out of nowhere behind Jackie's left shoulder
"He deserved that" said Jackie defiantly
"You hear that Huey, she says you had it comin". Luke was crouched down now taking a look at Huey and helping him back onto his feet
"I was wondering when that was gonna happen". Huey sat up rubbing his cheek and taking a flask from his inside jacket pocket and took a swig. "I actually think i needed that, thanks Jackie"

Jackie had a rather triumphant look on her face. "You're welcome scumbag"

There was a brief moment of silence until they all eventually made eye contact with one another and then they all simultaneously burst into laughter

Everything in Shenanigans had now been closed, the doors, the shutters everything except for the bar of course. Huey had slipped the bartender a wad of green tender and flashed some sort of badge just out of sight of both Luke and Jackie

Huey disgusted Jackie in an innumerable amount of ways but she just couldn't stop laughing. His dark cynicism about everything and anything that had worn on her so when she was in highschool, was now stomach churningly hilarious
The three of them drank into the wee early hours of the morning until the bartenders eyelids hung heavy with sleep
