The Man of Fifty-Four

The Man of Fifty-Four

A Poem by Marc James

Poem about a road accident outside my house.

The Man of Fifty-Four

There was an accident today,

On a road just outside,

Between and his motorbike,

And a family of five,

There was no guilt in my first thoughts,

As I wondered, what was his last?

As the road was cut short,

Like his life by the crash.

Did he see himself reflected,

In the child’s face behind the glass,

Reflect himself on his childhood,

Or did it all happen way too fast?

Did his eyes meet with the driver’s,

As he realized he’d been blessed,

By his own wife and kids he’d loved,

Like the family that bore witness,

Did time slow down for him,

Before he contemplated death,

Did peace rise within his heart,

As he savored his last breath,

As the desperate sirens got louder,

Did the agony outweigh the pain,

These questions all left unanswered,

He was gone before they came,

And so the man of fifty-four,

Without a picture, with just the frame,

I can never guess your sacrifice,

I miss you

Though I don’t even know your name.
