A Poem by Marcus Mckenzie

in timeless dream
i stole away to rome
and ’borrowed’ nero’s fiddle
it is the new american way

importunity
and, that failing,
force of arms
it is the new american way

compassion for advantage
and silence for a price
it is the new american way

universal dominion isn’t politic
manifested physically

subtle control of hearts and minds

tell the fools that they are magi
and they will forge your keys of power
as they forge their own chains
it is the new global way

malign the womb for its seminal part
and ignore the child
or deny his autonomy
though cordless and long since weaned
it is the new global way

crave and pursue the fruit of that labour
whose rotten core we profess to despise
it is the new global way
