On Materialism

On Materialism

A Poem by Maurice Marly

I’m curious Epicurus can you cure us from this curse;

And vivisect the veins that drain the virtues void of vanity,

Sentiments to send our cents to sense the scent of sanity;

Surely we aren't heathens if we heed to this, or hedonists,

But hapless babes staving despair with drapes and grapes and pianists;

So tell me Epicurus, will you lift us from this curse,

Will what I wear wear me down or will worry wear me worse?

The alliteration works really well here, you definitely build up a cadence with historical relevance and insight. I wish I knew more about Epicurus to comment more here. I think the most effective thing at work here if your turn on the reader where he or she becomes a pseudo stand-in for Epicurus as the speaker invokes him as a sort of eternal deity with whom he can communicate.
