Saving Daisy

Saving Daisy

A Poem by Maxwell Ryder

Coming upon a flower,
Jutting from the gravel
In the meadow lane,
Angling sunward,
A sun inside her
white-petaled face;
I stopped and
asked her, Why does
she grow here?
Doesn't she know
That at any moment
A car could end
Her life in its tread?
She told me,
Tomorrow I'll fold
Up, and it was you
I was destined
To meet and make
Smile;
Pick me,
Lay me in your
Journal's crease,
And have my
Spirit accompany
You for years;
Write down what
Here took place.
Save my beauty
For a son or daughter,
So that my death
Be not in vain,
For that day
When they find
A lonesome
Daisy sunning
Herself in the lane,
They will do the same.

I love the beauty held within your words and gracious act upon the daisy, how it transcends with your family via the ages and years. A memento of that moment in time. Cherished by all that it becomes an heirloom to treasure.

i took the same path as Ana ;) reading last first ... it is a habit ... and your poem is marvelous says i! full of promise, color, sensations and great, sound, earthy wisdom ..free form is my cup of tea ... a very natural sense of rhythm with the lines and breaks you give us ..easy read ..delectable treats with the seeming random rhyming ... such a fine experience "Saving Daisy" give us ..

:) ...................
Thought I would reach back to your first post. What a beautiful way of looking at it.
Her death not in vain. Coincidentally I wrote a poem with the same name but very different.

I enjoyed yours very much.
