NEON SKY

NEON SKY

A Poem by Missouri Monster

From the moment your hand laid across my face
we ignited a spark,
a flickering light in my all-consuming dark.

My breathing had hitched and your cheeks glowed bright;
we became a neon sky; we lit up the night.

The brush of skin against skin,
slip of tongue to tongue,
a taste of you, and I knew I was done.
This thing we called soul-mate love,
perhaps was only teenage lust.
Slowly your mind grew hazed with smoke and beer,
our neon flickered and dissipated-
you watched me as I disappeared.

The brush of skin against skin,
slip of tongue to tongue,
one last taste of you, and the damage was done.

Front porches and playgrounds will never be the same
without your body stretched out against mine;

a burnt out neon sky; we became the night.
