I Stand Alone

As I stand here alone in the dark, my mind takes me back,
remembering the days when I was a young child.
The fear of you coming home after being at the bars all night
hits me like a ton of bricks.

My Mommy you will beat for sure when you walked in the door.
No reason for what you are about to do to Mommy
She has the house all cleaned up and spit shined. Dishes are washed,
laundry all done, neatly ironed and put in its proper place.

Nothing is out of place. Your dinner is on the table, has been for several hours now.
Now she has to get us girls bathed and ready for bed before you get home.
As she tucks us in she gives us all a kiss on the forehead.
We say Our Prayers together, then off goes the lights as she says good night.

Hours later I am awakened by the sounds of your loud, harsh words to Mommy.
I stand alone at my bedroom door, crying,
' PLEASE Daddy, no more hurting and screaming at Mommy.
She does not deserve this at all.
Besides you will wake my other two sisters and then they will be crying and scared.

Mommy can't take many more blows to her face. Look at her, Daddy, just look at her!
Can't you see the blood from her nose and lips you have busted?
Do you not see that you are hurting Mommy,
or do you just not care that you are hurting her so.
Please Daddy, no more hitting and screaming harsh words at my mommy.

She loves you. so Why else would she stay here with you?
Maybe it is just for us girls but she does love you.
As I stand here alone in the dark at the age of 36,
remembering what you did to my mommy so many years ago,
I have to wonder did you ever love Mommy?

0r Did you ever think of your three little girls who were sleeping in the next room?
Did you ever think what the hell am I doing? Why do I do this to their mother?
or Daddy did you even care what you were doing and who you were hurting?
Daddy you have been dead for going on 23 years now,
but the memories sometimes make it feel like yesterday.

As I stand here alone in the dark remembering all the pain, the bruises
and the scars you left behind, and the sadness you caused my Mommy,
I ask, 'Why Lord did he do these things?'
Memories of the way you hurt my Mommy when I was
a little girl will never go away because Daddy,
when you were hurting Mommy you were hurting your girls as well.
I pray that some day I will lose the bad memories of you
hurting my mommy and once again stand alone without
remembering all that you have done.,
