10 Ways of Looking at a Walnut

10 Ways of Looking at a Walnut

A Poem by Merrioh

10 Ways of looking at a Walnut

Snorting as if I were a pig,

Though not pink, snotty nor wet.

Nostrils hollow.

Souring through the sky like an owl,

Even if it is more so a graceful fall.

Ridged with lines indented into a turtles back,

Always hiding, frightened.

Hard, part of something else

Lonely, missing

My heart empty but holy

Once full of something unspoken.

I am deep but end quite suddenly.

Look deep to find what you are looking for.

You may use me to bury a body

I travel with the hearts, diamonds and clubs.

Rougher than the smooth reticulum

I am like the Golgi apparatus.

The UPS always delivers.

Half of me is gone

Lost, without my better half.

I thump on the ground with quite a thud

Broken and cracked, but still intact.
