Could You Be Mine

Could You Be Mine

A Poem by Michael W. Farrelly

Are you mine,
really?
Could you be?
Will you belong to this furious heart
and oracular mind
with it's twisted labyrinth of scars
layered one atop the other?
Nopw that that war has passed,
we hope, and not just entered transition,
and the bloody battered corpses of the past
and memories lay hideously askew
in all corners of our lives,
can you look in these sorrowed eyes
and mean 'I love you' as you say it?
If I lay beside you, as I often do
will you truly believe that I am at peace,
or will you assume I am gathering the pieces
together for a fresh assault?
If I take your hand
with it's tender skin
in mine
with it's torn and roughened skin
will you feel me carress the flesh
or presume I am preparing to crush the bones?
If I move closer and place my lips on yours,
will you know it is the passion and need
to taste you
not the desire to draw the last breath
from your lungs?
And if I progress beyond prelimanaries
and I enter you
will you feel my movement as necessity
to be a part of you, for us to be one,
or will you take each thrust as an attack
designed to drive pain into the very heart of you?
So, are you mine,
really?
Mine enough
to lose the fear?
Could you be,
truly
mine enough
to lose yourself
in any moment of desire?
