She Could No Longer

She Could No Longer

A Poem by Michael Fernandez

She could no longer hold on to what was hers,

As she struggled to grasp the chain that swayed in the distance,

Only a mere five feet away,

Yet, she couldn’t reach it.

She could no longer stand for what was hers,

As the ground fractured underneath her weaken feet,

The tiles of black and white falling into the void,

And still, the chain hung, rocking back and forth.

She could no longer depend on what was her,

The aging hands of time nearing their end,

The eons that they once counted,

Would soon dissipate forevermore.

She Could No Longer…
