How to Fill Your Skip Bins Correctly – 4 Tips

For construction and waste management companies that need to clean-up huge sites, it is often necessary to look for skip bins for sale.  But what’s the right approach to buy or hire a skip bin? Are there any restrictions on weight? How should the workers go about filling the bin?

Here are some tips on the proper way to use skip bins and hook lift bins:

1 - Choose an Appropriate Skip Bin for Your Tasks

Before you hire a skip bin, it is important to check how much skip space is needed. These bins are available in an array of sizes for different uses and their price of hiring charge depends on cubic meterage required by a user.  Check the range offered by your supplier.  If it is feasible in your project, gather the items to be placed in the bin at one spot and group them as per sizes so that you can make the most of available space.

2 - Do not over-fill the bin

Some skip bins suppliers do not have any weight restrictions when it comes to filling dirt, concrete and other permissible items in the bins. You simply have to make sure that you hire bin of the right size because overfilling it will only cause problems in lugging the vehicle. It is also important to remember that there are legal restrictions in Australia on filling a skip bin above the rim. Your supplier will also not take chances of paying heavy fines if you overfill their skip or hook lift bin.

3 - Pack the skip bin efficiently

You should pack your skip bin in way that you can make the most of available space. If there are items like metal sheets, plywood or waste timber that can be laid flat in the bin, make sure you put them in this way. Then follow up with other heavy things such as broken furniture, concrete and old appliances. If there are big branches of trees or other large items that can be broken down into smaller pieces, do that.

Lastly, small or light weight items such as papers and plastics can be filled in. Also ensure that you distribute the weights evenly to minimise the chances of it tipping over when it gets filled.

4 - Avoid air pockets wherever possible

In packing the skip bin tightly it is good to see that there are no air gaps left in it. When you pack in large items, fill in small things in between them to ensure that you are making the most of available space. If there are any hollow items such as tubs, buckets and other vessels, also fill them with rubbish that they can contain. And if , before the waste reaches the rim of the skip bin, there is still some space left, top off everything with a old mattress or another sheet of metal/ wood/ plastic. That will make for a nice lid.

Also give a thought to sustainable practices that protect our planet. Before you send the waste to a landfill, check if any of the things can be donated, resold or recycled.
