Use Your Skip Bins Correctly: Here’s How

To clean the huge sites that they work for, construction and waste management companies generally employ skip bins in Australian cities. While there are plenty of options for skip bins in Sydney and Perth, these organisations need to follow a strategized approach and also know the applicable parking rules of an area before they buy or hire the containers.

Here are some tips on the right ways to use skip and hook lift bins:

1-    1. Find the appropriate bin in  terms of make and size

Prior to hiring a skip bin, it is good to check the amount of space it will occupy on the field. Skip bins are manufactured in a variety of sizes for customised use. The sales price and hiring rates also differ accordingly. You must look at the range provided by your supplier. Also check if there is another brand offering a better assortment.  Check the quality of material and the bin’s sturdiness along with the volumetric capacity.  

2-    2. Do not fill the bin beyond the given markings even if it looks “empty”

Skip bins in Perth and other Australian cities typically have markings to show the height till which they can be filled with materials / garbage. Do not fill the bin beyond the marks even if you feel that the bin can take in more. Overfilling the bin can result in things spilling out of out of it when it moves on the road. And this spillage will attract hefty fines from the municipal authorities.

While you are not supposed to fill a skip bin beyond the marked capacity, you can make the most of available space by packing it right. If there are thin materials such as metal sheets, plywood or timber plates that can be laid flat, put them as a base first. Then place other things such as broken appliances, furniture, plastic and other miscellaneous items over them.

And if you have damaged items that be further broken into smaller pieces before they get recycled, break them down so that they can be put easily into the bin. 

Lastly, fill in small or light weight items such as papers and plastics. Also ensure that the weight is distributed evenly. Preferably, there should be a cover or lid such as an old mattress or another plastic sheet to keep the storage neat.

4-   4.  Avoid air pockets as much as possible

While packing a skip bin it is good to ensure that there are no air gaps left in between. When you pack in bigger things, fill in the small items in between to use the space judiciously. If there are any dished items such as tubs, buckets and other vessels, also fill them with the stuff that they can easily take in.
