Pretzels Covered in Chocolate, Not the usual Snack

I was sitting on the bus the other day when all of a sudden I really wanted a snack. I didn’t experience the usual progression of hunger, a slight increase of discomfort followed by more of an empty pang. It was more like: “Gimmie cookies- NOW!”.

My dilemma was twofold actually, because not just any snack would do. I wanted something salty and I also wanted something sweet. I wanted more from my food- not only did I want it to satisfy my hunger, I wanted it to excite my palate, to jump up in the air and into my mouth and maybe do a few triple axel’s while it was at it. Then I had a thought: chocolate covered pretzels- Bingo!

Chocolate covered pretzels are the perfect snack of choice because they are exciting and super easy to make (and for those who care- you can also make them gluten free!).  You can use any pretzels you want… I prefer the rods or the twists (clearly, because you can playfully sword fight with them).

Have a look below for what I did to satisfy my desperate chocolate covered pretzel cravings. Or for more chocolate snack ideas, check out our other recipes here!

Steps for making Chocolate Covered Pretzels:

STEP 1: GATHER INGREDIENTS

  • 1 package (12 oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips or Belgian chocolate wafers
  • 1 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 dozen pretzel rods or large pretzel twists
  • Assorted sprinkles, small candies, nuts, cookie crumbs, coconut, or hey how about bacon? (optional)
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips (optional)

STEP 2: MAKE PRETZELS

2a) Start by lining a baking sheet with wax paper. Chop up your chocolate into bits (OR don’t bother tying yourself into a pretzel and use wafers like I did). Microwave your chocolate on high in 30-second increments, stirring after each increment, until chocolate is just melted (usually this takes 1 minute). Remove from the heat and stir until smooth.

2b) Roll into the chocolate, I mean, roll each pretzel, one at a time, into the melted chocolate (you can use a spoon to help coat each pretzel). Coat each pretzel 3/4 of the way up.

2c) Decorate! Add sprinkles, cookie crumbs, or if your trying to ensure your boyfriend gets his servings of chocolate covered pretzels, add some bacon bits! Place chocolate covered pretzels on the prepared baking sheet and refrigerate until set (about 15 minutes).

STEP 3: EAT UP- MY FAVOURITE PART!
