You Did Not Take Him

You Did Not Take Him

A Poem by mikaylalocklear1

You did not take him,
he left on his very own two feet.
He traveled far and wide-
in depths away from me.

You did not tempt his fate,
it all so easily swayed.
Untethered from my own-
with time he slipped away.

You did not have to make declarations,
his ears were thirsty to hear-
the sweet whisper of forever
in arms so far from here.

You did not have to love him,
I am sure that he loves you.
And with all that is within him-
I am sure that he'll be true.

You did not have to take him,
he was never really here.
I have but faded memories,
and freshly fallen tears.

After reading this twice, I really like it. The thoughts are mentioned as though in a bereaved state. I can feel that even though he left on his own accord, his separation was from a slow death of his feelings.

Critiques: I'm guessing the end rhymes were intentionally near and not perfect. (feet, me, swayed, away).
Do you count syllables or meter? I haven't really checked but I don't think there's any need. I think the poem is great.
