Occupying Space

Occupying Space

A Poem by Rochelle Tyler

Reluctantly

I go through the motions
      of turning my light off
stalling beforehand
      staring at my bed.

Knowing only I
      will occupy
that space tonight.

Only I
      will hold the heat
the life the room needs
      from being an inanimate space.

The only rythm
      keeping beat
 in the otherwise
      silent room.

So I reach
      for some company
through the dial
      on the radio
letting the orchastras
      fan out
and reach the corners
      of the walls.

And I fall asleep
      to the melodies
your company
      has made me familiar with.
