Write Me a Poem

Write Me a Poem

A Poem by Avery Colt

Write me a poem of the sea,

My eldest son said to me,

Of pirate ships and derring do,

All upon the Spanish main,

And when the grand Armada came,

All of whom were slain.

Make me a poem of the sea,

My second son said to me,

On winter storms and autumn gales,

That rent and shivered all our sails,

And left us vacant on the lee.

Write me a poem of the sea,

My youngest one said to me,

Of all the vessels now afloat,

Tanker, freighter, ferry boat,

And naval ships in ports of call,

Bravest of them all.

Write me a poem of the sea,

My long lost lady said to me,

Who floats upon the purple sea,

All romance, now, tragedy.
