Far More Beautiful Than I

Far More Beautiful Than I

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Far more beautiful than I

Two doors down

and you hadn’t a clue

that I was the tabby cat

and the philodendron upon the sill

you were Sunday football games

and the vast delivery of pizzas,

whose friends were a mix gender

of low rise jeans

and Sam Adams

We merged occasionally

in the laundry room during the rinse cycle,

you complimented my taste in jazz

and the copper shine of auburn hair,

taking inventory of my eyes

and the nakedness of the third finger

of my left hand

you hadn’t a clue

that I was breakfast at tiffany’s,

that I am the happiest in the coldest of winters,

and cry at the singing of Auld Lang Syne

that I still wish upon falling stars,

and read poetry by Keats to his beloved, Fanny

that I love orchids

because they are far more beautiful than I

could ever be…

…will ever be

Let me walk with you in morning light and feel the purr of your delight surrounding me till the sun draws us down together on a day spent near heaven's gate. You will always be a beauty to me!

I like Al so much better!
This sad descriptive poem spells an acceptance of a perception that you were (are) not so beautiful but content in your 'winter with worn jeans'. But beauty is many things not simply looks. People being people see the physical form first but real people look beyond it to the person if given the chance.
This was a bonus of a poem with Chris's contribution below.

Your insight was enlightening, John. Wasn't Chris's review incredible? I am so blessed...

Yes Chris's review was amazing.
Tis as if layer after layer of person YOU is not cruelly but distinctly being displayed. The description of where and who is graphically set but.. but your last three stanzas stand - tho wavering a little, on the hints that came before.. or, so it seems to me. A sadly beautiful piece of writing.

...thank you for a wonderful review!
Two doors down... I used to dream -
of what I could have said
of what you could have said back...
of what little things meant
of a sprinkle of freckles
of how your head turned just sooo,
...of eyes glistening -
that just held me in place
and of hair made for tasting, touching.

At night, my mind remembered
...the scent of purple,
violet and lavendar as I dreamt.
...what lips did when the smile rose in the morning.
...the echoes of auburn...
highlights and shadows playing
flowing with every turn and step.
And how your hands - your hands
fingers tips moved and touched
...everything...

I caught you daydreaming
but didn't speak...
I knew you were watching his door
and all the people
always going in - always pausing
DOING something
= for Sunday's noise.
He was good -
adonis of the ways...
He was so much more
than I would ever be
- but I dreamed,
I really did dream...

Kelly, your words brought out echoes and tastes, and swirls of memories and purpose. A haunting thought-flow that continued. Beauty is in our eyes and beautiful is our perception and sometimes ...well, sometimes the eyes that glisten so softly in the dark see THEIR dreams where others see their sighs.

You moved me... thank you.

I always read and enjoy each writing, Kelly, but this smacks of self-persecution--for what reason intrigues me, but also alarms me a bit.
There, I said it.

the seeking is most important of all.
I am not sure I would agree with the ending of this poem. Wishing on falling stars, reading Keats, loving winter...that Kelly is beauty, far more than an orchid could ever be. I really enjoyed this today.
