The Exception

The Exception

A Poem by MunkyWrench
"

True story...

"

I’m standing here in heaven
moments after I have died.
I did her boyfriend’s laundry
then committed suicide.

I didn’t think I’d make it.
I thought I’d be in hell...
But I’m standing at the pearly gates
as far as I can tell.

I thought I would see devils
and a firey burning pit...
Instead I’m greeted by Saint Paul
and not a single flame is lit.

He says... “They make exceptions
for unrequited love.”
He says that there’s a special spot
for me here up above.

“Your room-mate friend... you fell in love
and it was love so true.
But suddenly she’s wondering
if HE can live here too...”

“More like a brother you would be.
So special till the end...
She took your heart and gave it back
and labled you her friend.”

“She made her choice.  It wasn’t you.
It’s really no ones fault.
How could the heart of mortal man
withstand this mad assault?”

“Your angels watched you weeping.
They saw your teardrops fall.
They felt your spirit breaking
as they made love just down the hall.”

“So God has chose to spare you
a pit of dark despair.
You won’t go to hell my boy...
You were already there.”

So I’m standing here in heaven
moments after I have died.
I did her boyfriend’s laundry
then committed suicide.

WOW. I've always struggled with the theology of suicide - and so most days I don't think about it - what happens to those who take their own lives - but this poem makes me think. I do believe God is benevolent - I know He loves everyone - and I "get" the idea of Hell on earth. I guess I will have to wonder because the answer isn't going to come on this side of existence - but the poem - it tells a wrenching story. Mechanically your work is solid - technically sound - and I as reader - my heart goes out to the guy.
