After Effects

Just something that popped into my head.

How can we have a "friendship"
when everything we remember
is our love and "relationship?"

We were childhood best friends,
did everything together everyday,
later became childhood sweethearts.

Something as simple as a friendship
after being so close for so long
is nearly impossible.

Now it's like we're mere acquaintances
the kind where everything
is forced and awkward.

Every time I see you I yearn for what was,
a hello kiss, a good-bye kiss,
but the expectations leave the ache of wanting more.

The after effect from laying eyes on you
is one of sadness and heartache
for everything that was or could have been.

I suppose now we're left to
decipher our own fucked up situation,
and hope to settle it, but I fear it's too late to fix the after effects.

Ahh, yes the "after effects" ARE devastating and I've always wondered how two people that were not only once friends, but in love later on, could become such total strangers. It's mind boggling. It makes one wonder why one moment can be so good, then the next, so black. With all the "relationships" I've had over the years, I still only have a a handful or two of people in my life that I trust and can call "friend", regardless of what we go through. To me "friendship" is a much deeper and more fulfilling concept than "Love". Love to fast clouds any chance of frienship. Good poem and obviously cathartic.

friends, it happens but very rare. Sometimes it's
better that way because one or the other would
be jealous and filled with why can't we still be together?
