Grow N Decay

Fluxus Music Instructional Piece Originally written for the Combustible Arts Ensemble

All performers may only choose one of 4 instructions.

1) Half-step up.
2) Half-step down.
3) Whole-step motion.
4) Percussion.

All performers (who have not chosen percussion), choose a sung pitch randomly and may only move away from the pitch within the bounds of their instructions and no further.

More specifically,

Half-step up, may only move between the pitch they have chosen and the pitch a half-step upwards.

Half-step down, may only move between the pitch they have chosen and the pitch a half-step downwards.

Whole-step motion may choose to move either a whole-step above or below their chosen pitch but cannot jump. They must always return to their pitch before moving in the opposite direction.

(Pitches should be held in longer-durations. Avoiding staccato.)

Percussion, though, must make short, pointillistic, percussive sounds in any manner they see fit.

All performers stand in a circle with backs to each other and eyes closed and do the chosen tasks.
