Ubiquitous

A Story by Neal

Apparently, whatever happens on Baldface Mountain, evidently stays on Baldface Mountain, but it’s just a tiny part of the universe, isn’t it?

"

After a day of hiking in the woods I come to an opening where a guy stood So I stop and listen to what he had to say despite wanting to push on He is an insistent backpacker like me descending while I ascend He says while we gaze up He points Some say it’s bare from the countless flying saucers alighting up there He asks if I was up for the climb I say after seventy or so miles on foot I was up for a nominal mountain hike like this He quizzically gazes at me Whatever I step out as he does as well Parting ways as they say So that is Baldface Mountain right there rising up in front of me I see why they named it now with a bare rocky peak What that guy said about the peak Whatever Pah Another interesting land form nature formed in ancient times Some might say God formed everything and determines all I know and believe what they call God is the Universe coexisting with us and all living things with Earth’s Gaia Everyone has opinions and beliefs Hiking guide says four hours to the summit From where it did not say Whatever It is three now I can make it easily Guide didn’t mention UFOs or the sort Nice to get out of the shade of the trees To see and feel the dazzling balmy sun Feet sore Blisters taken care of This pack getting heavier by the day Wearing down my shoulders Guide says beware of Summit Fever Yeah I know what that is Can fight the urge to climb an unobtainable summit I am totally capable to resist the so-called irresistible draw of conquering and standing on a summit Whatever All I need is one foot after the other At quick time to make it No problem Time to take a break Ah the water goes good Did not know I was so thirsty Refuel with a granola bar Okay here I go again Appears flat for a while as  I approach the foothills Sun is warmer than I thought Perspiration bothers my eyes I wish Sarah could see this sight I wonder what she is doing Reading, cooking, taking it easy Yeah she said she was not up to a long hike for two weeks Didn’t know what she might miss A little incline now but not too bad Four hours I wonder about that guide Now three forty five Getting steeper and gravelly Feeling my quads This pack pushing me down Getting heavier Maybe I do have summit fever Four thirty Press on Cannot give in now Heart rate’s up Sweat in my eyes I wonder what Bonnie is doing these days The sex we had was great during college She had such a pretty face I wonder why she went out with me Along the way I learned life’s most important formula The angle of the dangle equals the mass of the a*s Ha College was a trip So long ago now Why I got a degree in New Age Beliefs and Practices I have no idea Professor Bishop was a short, bearded quiet guy but a true believer Here I am here now On a different sort of trip One with nature and the universe Sarah would agree with me Not about Bonnie but the universe Ha Ow Watch your footing almost went down on that sharp rock That would put me out of action Hmmm How would I get help Wait for the next hiker I promised to disconnect with the outside world Sarah argued the point of leaving my cell behind Stupid maybe Stubborn for sure Optimistic most of the time All about anticipation and unstructured escapism Pessimistic idea now Chary when I consider about an accident Ow When I think about it my back really aches Comes from sleeping on the ground Wow the summit looms right there Faster than I thought Oh a false summit I couldn’t see the true summit because of the way the trail rose so quickly I know better Wonder how they are getting along without me at work Never many cyber legal claims for the agency to handle Probably partying Celebrating What about the flying saucers that guy told me If I had my phone I could check on that Never saw a flying saucer Why do they visit In college we touched on the ancient claims which sound like flying saucers UAPs They call them now Take a meal break Cold freeze-dried mac and cheese Good refueling Ha Let me see what the guide has to say for up ahead Next page Hmmm a special note It reads that it is advised not to spend the night on Baldface Mountain due to fog and mist that forms often Hmmm no mention of flying saucers UFOs missing time or the insertion of probes Ha Another false summit won’t fall for that again Must be hydrated I have to pee Right off the trail here Wait Check to see if there are any other hikers All directions clear Hey look at that impressive thing Ah that is better Less weight Ha Oh s**t peed on my toe  New hikers don’t look so new anymore Five-fifteen Maybe I won’t make the summit I hate sleeping on the side of a mountain at an angle With a possibly of rolling downhill Ha Trail disappeared on this solid rock Maybe its easier to step up Grade is getting steeper Keep pushing Quads aching Don’t know where they measured four hours to the summit Must be an expert hiker in perfect shape wrote the guide Im puffing now with just a slight increase in grade Keep going Six-thirty Going to have to stay on the summit tonight Probably solid rock up there Flying saucers indeed Sun going down Eye level now across the horizon Twilight will soon limit my sight I have to make the summit Maybe I did have summit fever Maybe overestimated my ability My stamina Perhaps I was in denial For sure Whatever Hmmm what is the haze up there Sun is heading down IS that the actual summit I didnt want to spent the night up here but here I am Blisters are hurting Quads ache Knees throb I am spending the night up here Only a few more minutes until Im up there This is solid rock Going to be an uncomfortable night for sure This haze is getting thicker They did say something about fog mist or something Whatever I have to rest Might as well sleep up here Actually dont have a choice Hah  Owww Sit down on this boulder Have a meal I need a drink first Wow this fog is getting thick Gotta eat Hmmm I was thirsty And hungry That is better Can think clearly But cant see clearly Hardly see my hand in front of my face Glad I have the pocket light seeing I don’t have my cell Geez the light makes this fog worse Funny it does not feel damp like fog Whatever Ill search on hands and knees to look for a flat spot to stretch out Go carefully don’t trip up Here right here a pocket in the rocks Glad I have this self inflater pad Roll it out and let it do its thing What is up with this fog Must be a regular thing if it is in the guide But can see stars above my head A satellite right there Whatever Howz the pad feel Good enough Roll out my bag Feels good to lie down Tired all over Sore muscles Flying saucers indeed Whatever Roll over on my other side Rock is hard Ha Downhill will feel good tomor What is that glow Rather luminous glow Must be the moon glow Let it go Close your eyes Sleep Wait Did I hear something In the glow Something moving Upright Dark against the glow Getting closer A silhouette A person Up here Cant see his face for the fog He is coming closer Said something Did he say something about an emissary I see stars like never before I feel weightless Where did the mountain go The sky is solid with stars Breathtaking The moon Up close Is that Mars I see red terrain The Mars face He tells me is old Ancient I see the asteroid belt I see in rapid succession Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune and Pluto Another planet beyond He says hes from there Im sleeping arent I he handed me something A shiny black stone Glowing marks Words on it Its humming Set it on my leg Marks disappeared Hes not there Whatever A dream Too much thinking about flying saucers He says yes and no Hmmm Sleep Ah Good sleep Sun is edging up Fog is gone Whats that loud noise Cant tell what direction that noise is from Oh from the other side of the mountain Hey a helicopter below the mountain top Whats he doing down there Coming up higher on my side Someone in the open door scoping around Wave They wave Coming overhead  Wait A guy coming down on a line Whatever do they want He landed Hes coming over Asks if Im me Yes I verify He said Ive been missing for three weeks What Wait My beard has grown out More than the stubble I had before going to sleep I have to go with him Let me get my stuff together I say What is this lump A shiny black stone Where did that come from When I board the helicopter with AARO on the tail I remember We are one We are ubiquitous
