My "Self"

My "Self"

A Poem by M

The world shouts a message that's hazardous to your health
They encourage you to be your authentic self
Sounds good and all but they're living in hell
Their mentality is the same as the day that we fell
Just be you, you don't need anything else
Go ahead, live life as your authentic self
The problem is, my "self" died the day I came to Christ
I gave Him my soul, He brought me to life
It's a supernatural perk, I don't own me anymore
I'm weaker now so I'm stronger than I was before
This isn't a religion that "works for me"
He died on a cross and hurt for me
I can't deny the burden that He lifted
The hurt, the hate, the shame that shifted
I can't be authentic to myself because everything I am is in You
I can only do what You tell me to
