Sparks

A Poem by Jamie Charbonneau
"

New relationships tend to stoke the fire of creation in me. Here's a new one, the first of many to come, spawned by my love of a particularly amazing man.

"

Wait for him and then...

and then sleep
through the night
wrapped in his arms.
Strong boy. (Why me?)

Pretty little boy
      meets
pretty little girl.
          (Neither little, really)
        (At least not anymore)
(Innocent word: pretty. Isn't it cute?)

The frame remains unchanged,
the body differs with
dings, scrapes, cracks.
Scarred plastic down to the metal
Your 6 cylinder to my 4.
            (Broken engine block.)
             (Cracked carburator.)
(Hundreds in repair. Smoke still pours out)
Miles and miles of
more wear and
t  e  a  r
(Spark plugs need changing?)

Years smarter.
Days longer.
We linger together
until dawn
breaks,

then more.

Wrapped up in each other.
Mentally, physically.
Just us and clothes
then
just us and blankets
then
just us and the 2nd
no 3rd

5th pack of smokes
because it just feels good
when you light them.
            (You always light them.)
(I can no longer control the fire)
(But it always responds to your touch)

Who knew the heat
could create
something so very
cool (drawn out).
Soothing the throat
hands have wrapped around.
Little bruises.
             (It's wrong)
(Shouldn't have to understand)
(Should never have felt like that)

Icy tingle across my lips.
Part. Inhale. Exhale.
Choke. Spit.
Always smoother the second time.

The third.

The fourth.
