the flashbacks till haunt me after all these years ..

While Drowning off Padliegh Hill

I doubt,

after all this time, you will ever

understand

just how insignificant I then felt

or quite simply

terribly overshadowed and small

Smaller even

and less important than that old

gilt framed

knot tying achievement award

that still sits

to the right-hand side of my now

late great

grandfather’s old writing desk ..

Which for some

reason, I was reminded of while

drowning and

desperately trying to crawl out

through some

rich kids rigid red plastic tube ..

Invariably stolen

from the playground of some

local school

which had been thrown in the

deep end of a

swimming pool off Padliegh Hill ..

There are some moments so traumatic on our journey through life, they have the habit of returning, and when we least expect it. This must have been a terrifying experience for a small boy who lived to tell the tale, though he has clearly never forgotten. The deep end of a swimming pool is mighty dangerous for a non swimmer. Flashbacks are most unpleasant. I have one where I was locked in a car for an hour and fifteen minutes as a sixteen year old with someone who was expecting far more than a thank you for a lift. I was damn lucky but it still plays out to this day. Padleigh Hill swimming pool could have been a disaster and we would have been without a poet on WC.
