A gentle but definite warning here Nev. to those who hang egos on anything going for gaining attention and in the writing world words have extra power - so watch out all poets with needy egos ........... well that's what I think this is saying - tho' knowing your work contains intriguing meanings I better rest my case...........Fay

wonderful, wonderful and wonderful! I read it few times, and don't know if what I got from Your words here is right, a hidden message for the poets and writers to stand up with their pens to fight with their knowledge and wisdom, when the other "men" are destroying the world with their ego and wars, here comes their real mission.
I guess I saw this differently than the others. Not working towards comparison, just wandering if I'm the odd reader. Not asking the question either, I know the importance of the poetic mystique!
I was thinking of this as a comparison between the man who needs it all and the man who needs very little to satisfy him. The line between the ego and the human being.
I read a book a few years ago called History of the Rain by Niall Williams (I would highly recommend it, btw) where the protagonist's father was a poet and he had lived a very simple life. There is much more to it than that. But the crux of it was he was striving for something for himself and all the other trimmings took second seat. The ego has a place there too, but it's different. I don't know. Your poem reminded me of that character and story. The poet who is seeking something deeper than a satisfied ego.
Truth is, your last stanza is true. True. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Good stuff, Neville.

I'm so glad you came along.. you seem to have picked up on more or less what I wanted to be picked up on, if you get my drift... I have never read the book you refer to, but from your brief cameo, that seems to be an interpretation along the lines I had envisioned... Having said that, I am always delighted when any one takes time to read me and often delight in the various interpretations and takes I get wind of... Bless ya and true :)
Writing is a gift not to be abused or bragged about. Any poet who has a huge ego will soon be pulled up by their readers who will stop calling on their work. Readers aren't daft, they are incredibly astute, at least most of them are.Not sure if this is what you mean Neville, as sometimes your lines have hidden layers. Agree with Jacob here.
there is no place for egos when talking about poetry.
The way i feel is that we are lucky to be writers...and what's important is how the writing stands on its own.
we give it life, but then it exists on its own merit, or not.
But egos always get knocked down....if we think we are great, we are far from it.
So let's just be poets and people who understand what a gift it is to write.

Thank you for reminding me of how it should be jacob
