Great write. I enjoyed reading it. This reminded me of a story by Loren Eiseley called, "The Star Thrower". It's about a man walking on a beach where tens of thousands of starfish were stranded and dying. He came across another man meticulously gathering each starfish and returning it to the ocean. He considered the stranger as crazy or silly for doing this so he told the fellow, "All your work is futile and useless. There are so many starfish dying and there's only one of you. You can't POSSIBLY hope to make a difference!" The stranger went on about his work, gently picking up another starfish and returning it to the waves. Then he turned and said, It MATTERED to THAT one. Like Confucius wrote in The Analects, "It is better to light a solitary candle than to sit and curse the darkness." Showing concern and care and small acts of kindness may seem to many as futile endeavors but if it saves the life of only one I would venture that the effort was not without reward at least for the one whose life was saved. But worry never helps anything. It's better just to do what you can from where you are to make a difference regardless of the odds against you. Complacency is contagious and apathy, infectious. But I believe that each of us has an inherent obligation to help one another and by so doing, help ourselves.
