Hold the Sugar

Hold the Sugar

A Poem by Neville
"

tip for today .. write it down quick, before its forgot and then you lose it 🤍

"

Hold the Sugar

He left it there, on the table

where they

once used to make love on

a fairly regular

basis too, he just happened

to add, while

wrapping a tear in a clean

   handkerchief ..

He often wondered these

days after so

many years, whether she

still retained

such perfect recollections

as he did, or if

she worried about anything

at all, except

maybe where he left her

mid-morning

coffee and rich tea biscuit ..

But what really

brought a tear to his eyes

on that day of

all days, was that he knew

she could not

recall whether he still took

his strong, black

and with no sweetener at all ..

A very emotionally touching, moving write. For me it pinpoints to the onset of either Dementia or Alzheimer's! I've experienced it twice with both my lovely parents and it is simply heartbreaking for those whose loved one is affected, but for the loved one it is not quite so bad because as the illness goes on they retreat into their own world and are very happy there, but don't recognise loved ones, and those they once knew well. How lonely it is for the partner of a loved one who fall victim to either illness! You have encapsulated the beginning of the end for the lady love of the gentleman with compassion, warmth and tenderness and expressed it superbly in the simplicity of the poem. Lovely work! Thank you for sharing, Neville...

I get the impression she has moved on to other things, while he is still stuck in the past. Perhaps he always did have a greater investment in the relationship than she did.

........ You really are a sweet talker John .. N.
A sense of loneliness and hurt in this one sided relationship and while it might be for lack of caring and interest but it feels to me like it may very well be aging or illness. My grandfather had alzheimer's and while he was loved to the end, we didn't always feel the love returned on our end, and it wasn't his fault. Whatever the true meaning, it's a great poem and readers will relate in their own way.

Ah, yes, Coffee means more than coffee in romantic relationships.
...and one party forgetting how the other party takes theirs kinda decaffeinates the party.
I prefer Maxwell House Dark Roast. I buy Store-Brand :)

Thanks for stopping by JD .. Neville :)
This is so poignant a write to me Neville. It speaks to me of one sided caring. He does so much for her, the little things count and yet she does not even recall how he likes his coffee. Of course there could be more than one reason for that and I won’t elaborate, other than today this poem spoke to me of loneliness and hurt. I hope Friday is kind to you my friend.
