Nothing is ever as it seems

Nothing is ever as it seems

A Poem by Nichole Jones

All that glitters is not gold

Or so I have always been told

And the more I seem to learn

The truer the saying holds

A culture based on dated ideals

That scorns authenticity

We idolize and respect the ones

Who best project a false identity

Yet in an ironic twist of fate

It’s always those chosen few

That deviously live those secret lives

Doing exactly what we’re told not to

Why idealize this distorted life

When time and again we see

The ideals society projects on us

Aren’t sustainable in reality

I think that I would rather

Live my life for me

Free to do the things I want

Being who I want to be

Not seeking to achieve perfection

I don’t need admiration or praise

Let me live the way I please

Not conforming to standard ways

Some may call me eccentric

Unorthodox, divergent or taboo

I could care less, and as a matter of fact

I feel the same way about you
