On The Deathbed

On The Deathbed

A Poem by Nitin Menon

Looking frail , gazing at the ceiling

It's time for life's final feeling

Gasping for breath as you lie on the cot

Memories emerge that you thought you forgot

Your deeds , your words pass through your head

People who touched you , living or dead

As you judge yourself and how you lived

You realize the futility of things believed

You realize what matters most

It's not trivial battles won or lost

It's not about what you end up as

A bank balance or fame earned in a manner, crass

It's about the subtle legacy left behind

In children, friends and things of those kind
