Nke-obele

Nke-obele

A Poem by Nnanna

Perhaps Onye is too little

He isn’t big enough to lead the masquerade

And none of his hands can reach mmowu’s mask

But his feet were designed for distances

And his heart has dreamt the best dreams

Yes, Onye is nke-obele

He is the little one

And none of his limbs are heavy, tough enough

But his wisdom is deep and yet high

The love in his heart, a rare one

Nke-obele, Onye, who doesn’t give you an answer

He takes to his heels

His silence is his prayers

His senses are his steels

But still he isn’t good enough

Onye, little, set apart

He will win on grounds distant from the ones we know

Because his story has been written in the sand and snow

His is a different dream

Alhamdulillah, His scars are his seam

Onye, the simple story of a separate world

The storms of silence and sweat

Nke-obele, the hero, the time

The time’s hero

And the hero’s time.
