A Crowded Room

A Crowded Room

A Poem by Nupur Joshi

A Crowded Room

In a room full of chattering people,
My entire existence never felt so feeble.
I opened my mouth in an attempt to speak,
But no one’s interest I seem to pique.

I raised my voice, their eyes turned to me,
That’s what I wanted, didn’t I?
Then why did my throat turn dry,
And why was my first instinct to flee?

I’m scared of their judgement,
I just want to be a part of them,
So, I shut my mouth and stay silent,
While in my mind myself I condemn.

I’ve realized that even in a crowded room, you may still feel lonely,
Among the living, your presence might seem ghostly.
We think that this is just our plight,
Yet forlorn are those who radiate the most light.

There is a difference between solitude and loneliness. Sometimes crowded rooms can be the loneliest places in town. Good insight in this one.
