![]() How to choose a relevant topic for an essay?A Story by Amy McGee![]() How to choose a relevant topic for an essay?![]() How to choose a relevant topic for an essay?Choosing a relevant essay topic can be somewhat challenging for students. For some people, it is easier to receive one specific or several topics to choose from. At the same time, others find it exciting to develop their ideas. If you have to decide on one theme for your paper, consider the recommendations in the following article so that the writing process goes smoothly. Understand the assignmentFirst off, you should read the task attentively and understand its point. It would be such a bummer if you only realized you did it wrong after completing it. You can ask a teacher or mates if needed. And yet, if you are still not sure what to write on a specific topic, it would be wiser to skip it now and explore it later, when you have free time " just for pleasure, so to say. Investigate the topics you liked the mostSometimes the theme can be fascinating and fresh. However, there might not be as much information on it as you would like to have. If only you are not going to write some personal thoughts on the topic " it's not an option. Consider the theme that is already well-explored, you have access to various sources, and it's fun to write about. Remember about the paper's engthTalking about less questions, this recommendation is incredibly precious if you see that you have too many questions for a small-sized paper. Note that a too broad topic of academic writing is tough to explore. If you want to write about some sport, consider choosing a specific representative or historical period of this sport. This would narrow down the topic, and you would still love to work on it. Asking questionsAs you look through the topics already written by others, you can also come up with your subtopics. Besides, keep in mind the following helping questions: What are the engaging and memorable examples you can name for this topic? Is the topic tied to a specific geographic location? How can others relate to it? Why does it matter to me? The list of questions can be much longer, but importantly, these should be relevant for the topic's understanding. Sometimes it's better to ask less but ask about meaningful things " it’s all about quality, not quantity. Do some concept mappingA concept mapping technique would help you to visualize your writing's canvas. It allows you to see the general picture of your future paper. The concept mapping looks like a schematic version of your work: a central topic is in the center, and all the supporting subtopics and concepts are grouped around it. At this point, you can see what to delete or leave for your topic. All in all, these are the things to consider when picking the theme for your academic paper. More importantly, remember that after you do all that, you can see that the topic might not be as interesting for you as it seemed to be in the beginning. And that's also okay. At least now you have your set of recommendations that can help you pick the right one. And it is undoubtedly better to write about something that excites you.
