You and I are both afraid
We challenge the world to
call us out
so we can argue
that you are wrong
when you are right
We are both venerable
and searching souls
made of precise wit
and loving kisses
And we run from each other
but we run to each other harder
We are both loyal lovers
who love music more
You call me when you're drunk
You tell me secrets
you never tell anyone
You bare yourself
You come into the light of my eyes
and stare right on through
You have said some of the most beautiful things
on the edge of not enough dancing
and too much drinking.
You always forget what you say,
when in the moment,
you seem so adamant on me hearing you,
me understanding you,
so that someone else knows.
And in your sobriety,
You stamp out the love in me
so that it doesn't grow
You feed me logic and confusion
and hope that my belly's full
I'm tired of fighting you
to allow yourself to care
of getting pushed away
only to reel you back in
once you've realized your mistake
I deserve more than this
and you have the ability
if you would only swallow your cowardice
and be the man we both know you are
or you can continue to run from your destiny
You can continue to run from me
