Aristotle determines
In his valuation of art - poetics -
That tragedy is an imitation of higher virtue
And that comedy, in so far as its roots in ridicule,
.
In ugliness,
.
Is an imitation, then, of a lesser condition.
.
This, to the extent that it categorizes the arts,
Is an improvement upon Plato
Who saw in poetics the process of imitation -
Mimesis, the reflection of that which poetics seek to capture.
.
In following, Plato's concern was less with the reflection of a thing
Than it was with the thing itself - a poem about love being a lesser imitation
.
Than the act of love itself, dogs, poems about dogs, roses, rain,
.
So forth,
So forth,
.
Funny thing that - in my view
A poem intended to make others laugh
Has far more value
Than those that attempt to make their reader cry.
.
.
Cannot make a person laugh, through poetry,
To save my f*****g life - I'm not a born comic,
Hardly funny, and have lived too serious a life
To possess such lengths of levity.

Life is serious.
To live, under the harness of the human condition,
Yoked to our desires, our disappointments,
the inescapable cycle of striving, and failing,
of having and losing, wanting
.

and existing in perpetual separation from that which could satisfy,

is a condition in which laughter, the purest expression of joy,
can fundamentally ameliorate - even amidst the direst of circumstances,

.
the most traumatic, ill-fated instance or the lowest extent in which we could suffer.

To laugh, especially with one another, is to relieve ourselves of the seriousness in which we live,
to buttress against the harsh realities of the world, to momentarily anesthetize an existence,
which, in every case, inevitably ends in the loss of that which we hold the most precious -
be it those in whom we love, or the perceptive consciousness that derives from our being alive.

Now, will someone please turn their phone off.

This is a lecture hall, and your ringtone is disturbing.

Thank you.
